Jeremy Browne, Taunton MP lends support to anti bingo-tax protest.

The Mecca Bingo hall at Taunton had a new bingo caller last week. Taunton MP Jeremy Browne came forward to show his support to the fight against the raised taxes that the bingo industry has been burdened with. The MP did an entire shift as a bingo caller at the Mecca bingo hall working side by side with the staff at the bingo hall.

Many MPs have come forward to show their support to the campaign across the UK. The Somerset County Gazette reported that Mr. Browne worked the full shift with May Little and Monica Borska-Ulatowska, both members of the Taunton Mecca bingo hall staff.

The Taunton MP also spoke to the newspaper- "The only gamblers who are being clobbered with the higher 22 per cent rate are the people who enjoy visiting their local bingo club. 1,900 customers visit Taunton Mecca Bingo every week - on Sunday evenings there are always several hundred people in the club." The well informed MP also stated that 31 bingo clubs in the UK have already shut down in the last year.

Mr. Browne’s efforts to support and publicise the cause add momentum to the UK bingo industry’s campaign against the increased bingo tax which was raised from 15% to a steep 22%. Bingo halls and clubs all over the country have been shutting down unable to bear this increased tax burden. Earlier events like the smoking ban have already affected business severely. The global recession has not helped matters and this increased tax has been the proverbial last straw for many bingo clubs, forcing them to shut shop.
the UK bingo industry is in deep crisis and it is hoped that the government does all it can to revise the tax and helps  this struggling industry get back on its feet.
