French gambling monopoly to sell shares? - Online Bingo News

Bloomberg is reporting that the Franch government could be selling shares in the country’s state-run gambling operation Francaise des Jeux.  The move is seen by online bingo industry observers as part of a plan to liberalize its gambling market while legalize online betting, a development that could see non-French online bingo halls being able to access the French market.

In an effort to help Francaise des Jeux . . . “evolve in market conditions similar to those of its competitors in new markets, Francaise des Jeux will need to adapt its strategy, its organization, its governance,'' Budget Minister Eric Woerth is reported by Bloomberg as telling French ministers.  “The state will start thinking about the evolution of the group's shareholding.''

However, online bingo games operators in the UK bingo online sector may have to be patient before tangible results are seen in the relaxing of France’s restrictive gambling laws.

“For the period up to the opening of the market, future potential operators have to respect the current law,'' the Woerth said.  “Clearly, online gaming remains banned and all related publicity as well.''

The new regulations are expected to insist new licensees in a newly regulated market will ban underage players and prevent gambling addiction.
