EC to move against German online gaming ban - Online Bingo News

The wrath of the European Commission (EC) is to come down on Germany after all sixteen German states signed a protectionist accord banning online gaming by foreign companies, according to reports in Reuters.

The legal action by the EC is expected to be enacted this week.  The EC’s opinion on protectionism is governed by the European Community’s policy of free trade between member states which the German accord directly contravenes.

Under the accord, non-German online bingo games operators and online bingo halls would not be allowed to access the German market, a bingo market that is in its early stages of development.  Only the state monopoly would be able to offer online bingo in Germany under the new accord.

The German ban has resulted in a number of protests from international gaming companies with some threatening legal action themselves.  The European Gaming and Betting Association confirmed its stance against the ban saying it directly contravened EU law.
