UIGEA regulations to be implemented sooner than later - Online Bingo News

The legal action being taken by pro-online gambling lobby group iMEGA against the legality of the US government’s UIGEA law may have revealed that the regulations in support of UIGEA may be ready for implementation sooner than thought.

iMEGA’s action against UIGEA is of interest to online bingo halls and operators of online bingo games in that it may help force a reversal of the law which has seen the non-US online bingo industry shut out of the US market.

iMEGA is currently trying to see UIGEA restrained due to a lack of supporting regulations required by the controversial law.  The US government is countering iMEGA’s case with the argument that the pressure group does not constitute a valid industry representative.

However, strong questioning by the presiding judge hearing the case may have forced the government’s legal representative to admit that “good progress had been made and the regulations would be soon available for implementation”.

If this is the case, then the arrival of such regulations will become a factor in the current WTO stand-off over the US’ discriminatory policy in restricting foreign online gaming companies from operating in the US.  Such regulations will strengthen the case of those countries seeking compensation from the US over its intentions to withdraw from its WTO obligations relating to the online gambling industry.
