US argument unchanged against iMEGA - Online Bingo News

An attempt by pro-online gambling pressure group Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA) to take the US government to court over its Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has meet with the same response by US authorities.

iMEGA has sought a a temporary restraining order on the implementation of UIGEA in an attempt to reverse some of the damage already done to internet gambling companies despite the relevant regulations still not having been framed by government bodies.

Online bingo observers following the case have noted little change in the US counter-argument which seeks an outright dismissal of the iMEGA case.

Top of the US government’s strategy to dismiss the case is the assertion that iMEGA lacks the right standing to mount a challenge of UIGEA under the First Amendment to the Constitution.

A decision on the US’ case to dismiss is pending.

Free online bingo operators and internationally-based online bingo halls will also be aware that the US also faces pressure over its UIGEA legislation via the World Trade Organization (WTO) in a case brought against it by the Caribbean nation of Antigua.  The concurrent action by iMEGA along with Antigua’s WTO action is an attempt to re-open the US market to non-US online gambling concerns and has major ramifications for the online bingo industry if they are successful.
