I was playing my current favourite slot game at Wink Bingo yesterday, the X Factor slot, and came upon this interesting bit of news when I moved on for a game of online bingo. This is one of the reasons I so love online bingo, it’s a win-win for me; I get my daily fix of the bingo game and get to hear the latest gossip as well!
X Factor judge and ex-Girl’s Aloud singer Cheryl Cole has been recently seen advertising L’Oreal shampoo on the telly where she says ''My hair feels stronger, full of life, replenished with a healthy shine. It’s got its mojo back.” Turns out that her hair isn’t even real; she uses hair extensions!
Companies aren’t allowed to go claiming miracles on television when none exist and we have a governing body in place to make sure that advertising is fair and does not mislead the public. Not surprisingly, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received 13 complaints from viewers who claimed that the L’Oreal adverts were misleading.
One of the complaints was from journalist Daisy Goodwin who said, 'My daughter, aged nine, has been saying, ‘Please can we buy the shampoo because I want to look like Cheryl Cole.’
“But her hair is not her own. The reason her hair looks fabulous is because of hair extensions. I didn’t even see the reference to them in the ad. Women are being taken for a ride. It is not the same as having your own hair. It’s bonkers.'
If the chats in the online bingo rooms are anything to go by, Daisy can rest assured that the bingo players completely agree with her point of view. Unfortunately, the ASA does not. During the 30 second advert, a message flashes up for two seconds which reads 'styled with some natural extensions'. According to the ASA, 'A problem would only arise if the ad did not make clear that she is wearing these extensions.”
To me, a 2 second message still smacks of ‘misleading the public’ but ASA get to have the final word on it. Oh well, its back to a game of online bingo for me!
