Bingo players were once stereotyped as a gaggle of blue rinsed old ladies, in fact, even today, if you were to ask the average Joe on the street to describe a bingo player, they would probably describe their grandma to you.
Well, I’ve got news that will destroy that stereotype right away. Do you know that Russell Crowe is a big bingo fan? Yes! And guess what? We’ve yet to see him with a blue rinse [unless it’s for a film role that we haven’t heard about yet!]
Crowe discovered a fascination for bingo when he worked as a bingo caller in his native New Zealand at the age of 16. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for us, he was sacked from his job for his refreshingly unique if somewhat rude take on famous bingo call phrases. He is famously said to have replaced the calling for number 1, which is traditional ‘Kelly’s Eye’ with the somewhat more relaxed ‘Number one, up yer bum”! Well, the bingo world’s loss was Hollywood’s gain.
In fact, the 45 year old winner of the BAFTA for A Beautiful Mind, is so fond of playing bingo, he even got his wife playing it during her pregnancy! He is often known to head down to his local bingo hall regularly for a quick and relaxing game of bingo.
A relative of his wife Danielle confided in an interview, "He loves talking about his days as a bingo caller, he had a great time. He treated it as a bit of a joke at first but he really got caught up in the excitement of it all.
"Russell tried to spice things up by using ruder versions of the bingo calls. His bosses failed to see the funny side and booted him out, but he says he always checks to see where the local venue is when he's somewhere new.
Here is the million dollar question… does Crowe play online bingo and if so, what are the chances of my playing bingo in the same chat room as him? Well, I can dream, can’t I?
